Your child needs you!!!

Everyone agrees that parents are their children’s first and most important teachers. That job doesn’t end when they walk in the school door. The full involvement of parents is vital to a child’s education. Research consistently shows that when families take an active, direct role in their children’s education, children get better grades, higher test scores, have greater enrollment in higher education, are better behaved and have more positive attitudes. In addition to benefiting your child, your involvement allows you to know what is happening at school, making conversation with your child flow more smoothly.  The best prevention to losing touch with your child is having knowledge of and involvement in the environment where they spend most of their time.

What can you do???

Saint Thomas More strongly encourages that every family volunteer 30 hours each year.  There are countless ways to spend these 30 hours (15 for single parent families). STM provides opportunities for you to get involved: in the classroom, during specials, field day, field trips, office help, provide needed refreshments, Home School Association Committees… just to name a few.

What now???

Watch for information from your classroom teachers and in the Knight Times for your chance to sign up and be a part of the STM community.  You may also place your name on any one of the sign-up sheets at orientation, or open house.

Hours may be served from June 5, 2005-June 9, 2006 (If you helped over the summer, submit your hours!) Hours may be served by an adult who is 21 years of age or older. Hours should be recorded and turned in, using one of three methods:

1. Download a log sheet and turn it in to one of the black boxes at the lower or upper school front doors (Quarterly reminders will be in the Knight Times for turn in times, or you may turn them all in at year-end).
2. Email them to the Parent Participation Committee Chairperson.
3. Use the coupons available at the visitor sign-in desk, to record your time and turn it in to one of the black boxes at the lower or upper school front doors.

Tracking volunteer hours has provided valuable information regarding the volunteer needs and commitment provided by STM families.  Volunteer hours are recorded in a confidential manner and provided only to Sister Catherine.
